East Valley Partnership’s President & CEO is Stepping Down

John Lewis, President/CEO of the East Valley Partnership, has announced that he will step down in his current role as he has been called to serve as a Mission President of the LDS Church.

Lewis will serve a three-year assignment in Cambodia beginning July 1, 2018, alongside his wife, LaCinda Lewis.

“My role as president and CEO of the East Valley Partnership has been a leadership opportunity of a lifetime,” Lewis said. “It has been a distinct honor to work with leaders in the thriving PHX East Valley who are focused on doing all they can to prepare our region for the future.”

Lewis served as a volunteer with the Partnership for six years before being named the organization’s president in 2015. He was selected from a field of 50 candidates nationwide to succeed Roc Arnett, the previous president of the Partnership who served the organization for 13 years.

“John has been a strong force in renewing the organization’s commitment to the East Valley and retaining a strong and diverse membership base,” said Rhonda Curtis, chair of the Partnership.

The Partnership was formed 35 years ago as a cooperative effort among the East Valley’s six communities – Apache Junction, Chandler, Gilbert, Mesa, Queen Creek and Tempe. Since then, the region has experienced exponential population growth and added thousands of new jobs. Today, the six communities boast a combined population of 1.3 million. Because of its talented and highly educated workforce and favorable quality of life, the area also continues to be a magnet for new businesses and entrepreneurial ventures, particularly in industries such as aerospace and aviation, technology, financial services and healthcare industries.

During his tenure, Lewis played an integral role in these efforts by launching a mentoring forum for PHX East Valley business owners and entrepreneurs and forming a healthcare leadership council. He also worked with regional officials and Arizona Tech Investors to start the PHX East Valley Angel Investor Initiative, designed to catalyze economic growth by raising awareness of the importance of angel investing and enhancing access to early-stage funding for East Valley tech startup companies.

Previously, Lewis, 60, served as mayor of Gilbert for 7 years, where he was active in numerous town, region and statewide initiatives.

The Partnership’s 75-member board of directors will discuss plans for recruiting a replacement for Lewis in early January.

“Through the next six months, it will be business as usual, as John continues his work in moving our region forward in a productive and positive way,” Curtis said.

Economic Forum Celebrates Innovation, Leadership on December 21st

East Valley Partnership’s premiere annual event, the PHX East Valley Economic Forum, will feature regional discussion on innovation and leadership by bringing together civic, education, business and other community leaders to discuss issues important to the future of our state and recognize the lifetime achievement of selected individuals.

On Wednesday, December 21, 2016, this year’s event will feature ASU President Dr. Michael Crow as keynote speaker. Under Crow’s leadership, ASU has established more than a dozen new transdisciplinary schools and large-scale research initiatives. During his tenure, the university has also nearly quadrupled research expenditures, completed and unprecedented infrastructure expansion and was recently named – for the second time in two years – the nation’s most innovative school by U.S. News and World Report.

Preceding the keynote speeches, the distinguished ‘Excel Awards’ will be presented to this year’s awardees. These leadership awards are bestowed upon the best and brightest leaders in the East Valley communities. The Dwight Patterson Lifetime Achievement Award and the Kerry Dunne Sustaining Leadership Award will be presented to Richard Morrison and Cox Communications, respectively. Morrison is a past EVP Board Chair and long-standing community leader whose work in water law and agribusiness has positively impacted the region for decades. Cox Communications is a long-time supporter of many PHX East Valley initiatives, and a business with a passion for serving the communities where they operate and has given unparalleled financial support and to a number of causes in our region.

The East Valley Partnership will debut the 2017 PHX East Valley Economic Profile at the event, in collaboration with Salt River Project and Wells Fargo. The profile is a unique tool that showcases demographics and workforce information about business, education and communities in the PHX East Valley. The eight-page brochure is used by Partnership members as well as other businesses in the community and this year’s version will feature a fold-out regional asset map – a useful publication for both visitors and residents alike.

The 2016 PHX East Valley Economic Forum will be held at the Tempe Mission Palms hotel located at 60 E 5th Street in Tempe on Wednesday, December 21, 2016. Event check-in will begin at 11:15 AM, with the program and luncheon starting at 12 noon. The program is anticipated to last until 1:15 PM.

My Turn: Gilbert Says Farewell to an Authentic Leader

It’s rare these days that you meet someone who can so easily connect with people on a personal level yet maintain those friendships even as difficult decisions are made.

It’s unusual to meet someone who can articulate a big-picture vision for the community yet also possess the leadership skills to actually get it done.

The Town of Gilbert these past seven years has been fortunate to have a mayor with these qualities – and more – leading this community with equal parts compassion and steely effectiveness.

The term “caretaker” doesn’t apply to how Mayor John Lewis has approached his job as Gilbert’s top elected official. To be sure, he cares. But he has done much more than just look after this town – he’s transformed it.

Authenticity in too often superficial politics

Mayor Lewis has led Gilbert at a time when our town has been consistently ranked as one of the fastest-growing in the United States. He’s balanced our small-town sensibilities with 21st Century know-how. His authenticity shines brightly in the all-too-often superficial world of politics.

Indeed, the Lewis family has called Gilbert home for 35 years – he’s seen Gilbert transform from the world’s reigning “hay capital” to a high-wage jobs center that is home to blue chip companies like Orbital ATK, Banner Health/MD Anderson, Ironwood Cancer & Research Center and Dignity Health – to name a few.

Under his leadership, Gilbert has seen the ground-breaking of Rivulon, a project in the Loop 202 corridor that will add 15,000 jobs and 250 acres of commerce. He led negotiations for the recent expansion of Orbital’s satellite manufacturing facility, a project that deepens the global company’s roots in Gilbert with a 60,000-square-foot expansion and 155 new employees. And he has been a steadfast supporter of downtown’s Heritage District, which has blossomed into a nationally recognized restaurant and entertainment district.

Growing town with low taxes

Economic development is important, but so is the town’s fiscal health. Gilbert consistently ranks as having one of the lowest combined tax burdens and cost of service of any major city in the region.  The town’s sales tax rate is among the lowest in the state at 1.5 percent. The town’s recent Aaa bond rating makes it one of only four Arizona municipalities to have earned this distinguished hallmark of sound financial management.

This has all been achieved while about 90 percent of residents rank town services as being excellent or good.

Navigating challenges

Sometimes a measure of a leader is realized during times of crisis. When the town garnered headlines for highly publicized disagreements among its Gilbert School Board members, Mayor Lewis provided consistent, positive leadership, sending the message that while we may have differences of opinion, quality education is the cornerstone of Gilbert’s quality of life. He understands that excellent education opportunities are essential to supporting our workforce and key to helping attract and retain businesses.

One of the things I so admire about Mayor Lewis is his willingness to confront challenges head-on. The mayor recently made it his mission to confront the behavioral- and substance-abuse crisis in the community. In doing so, he enlisted the help of faith and community leaders, law enforcement, nonprofit groups and town officials to come together to find solutions in helping those in need.

Taking on regional role

As most people know, Mayor Lewis plans to leave his post to take on new challenges. He will soon take over as the executive director of the East Valley Partnership, where fortunately he will still have a voice in policy decisions that shape Gilbert and the entire region. Anyone who has had the pleasure of spending a day with Mayor Lewis knows it’s wise to strap on your running shoes. Even in his new role, don’t expect him to slow down. That’s good news for Gilbert – and Arizona.

Mayor Lewis, your leadership will be missed, but I’m happy you aren’t going too far. Thank you for your commitment to our community.
